Chronic Illness and Caregiver Support

Understanding the Connection between Stress, Trauma and Chronic Illness

Chronic and traumatic stress increase the risk for many types of chronic health conditions. Both chronic stress and trauma have similar effects on the body and share many of the same symptoms. Each causes damage by keeping us stuck in an activated stress response (aka fight-or-flight). Over time, elevated stress hormones and inflammation damage systems throughout the body. This damage can lead to chronic conditions such as addiction, anxiety, arthritis, depression, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and obesity.

How we take a holistic approach to mental health:

As mental health therapists, we work with clients from a holistic perspective that incorporates body, mind, and spirit. We understand how factors such as genetics, medical conditions, past experiences, relationships, lifestyle choices, and additional stressors can impact our clients’ mental health and overall wellbeing.

WHAT IT MEANS TO US

These elements—body, mind, and soul—are interconnected, and optimal mental health involves nurturing each aspect.

  • The body represents the physical aspect of our being. It encompasses our physical health, sensations, and physiological processes.

  • The mind refers to our thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and cognitive processes. It encompasses our mental and emotional well-being. It includes aspects such as self-awareness, emotional regulation, problem-solving skills, and the ability to cope with stress.

  • The soul represents the deepest essence of who we are. It encompasses our spirituality, values, purpose, and connection to something greater than ourselves.

How does this connect to chronic illness? Let’s look at the impact of trauma

All trauma is stress, but not all stress is trauma. Stressors that threaten our sense of safety and self are classified as traumas. Traumas change the way we view ourselves, other people, and the world as a whole. Depending on the circumstances, some traumas may lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Unacknowledged or unresolved trauma can also negatively impact physical health. If you have experienced trauma or are struggling with symptoms of PTSD, support is available, and treatment can help.

SYMPTOMS OF PTSD

  • anxiety

  • avoidance of trauma triggers

  • depressed mood

  • difficulty concentrating

  • flashbacks

  • hyper vigilance

  • insomnia

  • irritability

  • nightmares
